I made this pendant for a client whose partner was a diver. She was delighted with it.
Most jewellers don’t want to make anything this heavy because of the material costs, but I cut my teeth in the 1990s when silver could be got for £15p per gram. (It’s currently £1.32)
It’s also difficult to cast large pieces in silver without getting all sorts of problems that are fatal to the finish, so, all in all, this manta pendant is not a good idea.
I love it, though. It’s sleek and smooth and heavy in the hand, and the reflections glance off its curved surfaces in a pleasing manner. Jewellery, for me, is all about the beauty of the piece itself rather than necessarily the fashion aspect, and it helps when you’re emulating a creature that has such intrinsic beauty and flows with such grace.
